Lacuna Coil
Live @ Corporation, 5/11/11, Sheffield
To be described as an ‘Italian goth metal band’ may be an instant turn-off for most people… to have longevity and sustainability within said genre is therefore a pretty remarkable feat, one which Milan raised Lacuna Coil have successfully moulded together. Creepy riffs, hard rock suppliers they may well be yes; however, they sure know how to pull in the crowds with their performance at Sheffield’s Corporation on Friday 5th November.
Although the standard clientele for Lacuna Coil, i.e. Evanescence front woman Amy Lee look-a-likes, came in sure abundance, the secondary room at the largest rock venue in the North of England was pretty packed to say the least. It seemed that although they attract a specific niche their music is versatile enough to win in crowds from across the entire spectrum. Opening with track Spellbound from the bands fifth studio album Shallow Life, the audience were plunged into a set of melodic vocals in collaboration with intricate rhythmic patterns, producing an unarguably eerie tone. Cristina Scabbia, lead vocalist and intriguing front woman perfectly suits her role as ring master in a sinister circus, enhancing the energy with her fluid stage presence and deep sustained vocals.
Other tracks, Out Truth and Within Me, both from Lacuna Coil’s March 2006 album Karmacode, were littered throughout the hour long set for the heavy six piece, along with the group’s latest single Trip The Darkness. Released earlier this year, the new track favours a more modern slant to dance and electro synths throughout, no doubt a sign of the times but also an indicator of the progression of Lacuna Coil. Although not totally winning over all of the two hundred plus audience members, it’s refreshing to witness a change in pace and mood for an already successfully established live band. Let’s hope their fans agree.
